Most people in Dubai have eaten Iraqi kebab. Very few have eaten Iraqi breakfast — which is a shame, because it's the meal that tells you most about the cuisine.
Iraqi breakfast is not a quick coffee and pastry. It's slow, communal and often the main event of a Friday morning. Here's what's on the table.
Kahi is a flaky, layered pastry baked until it shatters. Kaymar is thick clotted cream, closer to a dense mascarpone than to European cream. The two are served together with date syrup poured over.
It's rich, and it's the single most recognisable Iraqi breakfast dish. If you order one thing, order this.
Broad beans slow-cooked in broth, poured over torn bread until the bread softens. Warming, filling and completely unlike anything in a Gulf hotel breakfast buffet.
Eggs cooked with tomato, onion and minced lamb in a shallow pan, served bubbling. The Iraqi cousin of shakshuka, heavier on meat and lighter on spice.
Pacha (also written patcha or paça) is sheep's head, trotters and stomach, slow-cooked overnight and served with bread soaked in the broth.
It's not a beginner dish and nobody pretends otherwise. But it's a genuine Iraqi Friday tradition, and finding it properly made in Dubai is rare.
Kabab Erbil serves the full Iraqi breakfast spread from 9:00 AM daily at both branches — fifteen breakfast dishes including all of the above. Browse the full menu to plan the table.
