Where to Find Iraqi Food in Sharjah: Al Taawun and Al Khalidiya

Iraqi food in Sharjah concentrates around Al Taawun Street and the Al Khalidiya and Al Majaz districts either side of it. It is one of the emirate's main arteries, minutes from the Dubai border, and it is where Sharjah's Iraqi and wider Arab community eats — particularly late, because the kitchens along it run well past midnight.
Al Taawun Street runs through the north-western corner of Sharjah, close to the boundary with Dubai. Coming from Dubai it is the first substantial stretch of Sharjah you reach after Al Mamzar, which is why people from Al Nahda, Al Qusais and Al Mamzar often treat it as their local rather than driving into Deira.
Al Khalidiya sits along the street itself; Al Majaz, with its waterfront, is the district immediately south. Between them they hold most of the emirate's Iraqi and Levantine dining.
Two reasons, both practical. It is the closest properly residential part of Sharjah to Dubai, so it draws from both emirates in a single catchment. And it is a late-night street — the kind where a family arriving at 23:00 is unremarkable, which suits a cuisine built on long dinners and dishes that take hours to cook.
If you are new to Iraqi food, the order barely changes from Baghdad to Al Taawun:
By car it is a straightforward run up through Al Mamzar and across the border; Al Taawun is the first major Sharjah street you meet. There is no metro into Sharjah, so this is a drive-or-taxi trip rather than a public-transport one — which is part of why the street's restaurants keep long hours.
Thursday and Friday evenings, and later than you would expect — Iraqi dinner starts late. If you want a quiet table, come before 20:00 or after midnight.
Very. Iraqi dining is built around shared tables and large orders, and families with children late in the evening are completely normal here.
